The gaze set upon the photograph can’t be pacified: the joyous colours revealed their polluted nature by contrast with the black of the ‘chien luttant contre la courant’ (dog fighting against the flow), a possible discard among discards – or perhaps the only animate being in an inanimate view. The theme refers to the black painting “El Perro” (The Dog) by Francisco Goya, as seen from the back of the scene, where the sand swallowing the dog is the infecting rubbish, the discard of the consumer society.

The work carried out on the occasion of Andrea Caretto’s Cassagna Project on dumps does not give an aesthetic depiction of the degraded landscapes of the present day, promoting their assimilation. On the contrary, the work offers a critical instrument which stresses the dichotomy between positive and negative, between consumerism and the decay brought on by dumps, universally deplored, fueling a more complex interpretation.
